I certainly have an “EGG”sperience I can detail. It was such a traumatizing event that I will NEVER worry about it happening again, because I am now AWARE. As with most grills, when cooking with the lid closed, it is a good idea to ‘burp’ the lid before opening all the way while the grill is in operation. It is especially true with a Big Green Egg. I have been doing cooking demos on the square for a couple of weeks- giving samples, laughing, smiling with happy people eating ‘egg’cellent food I had cooked for them — when I turned around to take some sausage off the grill and I FORGOT to burp it !! When I opened that egg, the flame felt like an explosion… of course, it was mostly my fear , but the problem was– I was grilling smoked sausage, I had the plate setter in– legs up with the rack on top. The sausage grease was pooling on the plate setter and the grease caught on FIRE when I opened the egg. YIKES !!! and if you know me… I have a head full of hair.. and I want to keep it…. but my reactions we way quicker than I realized and I slammed the lid back, but the ceramic top on and shut the bottom damper, problem solved immediately. The grease fire was snuffed right out ,, and I turned around – smiled and kept on grilling and serving sausage like nothing EVER happened… I do have my pride you know… and I was so thankful no one saw me go down in flames… so make it a habit to burp your egg…every time if you want to keep your hair.
